Workshop 3 - Site Specific Dance

WORKSHOP #3

SITE SPECIFIC DANCE EDUCATION

TEACHING DANCE
IN ALTERNATIVE SPACES

  • Evaluate practicum experience between 1 - 10
  • Share with a partner
  • Side by side in the mirror show a movement to express number
  • Vary the movement - direction or level
  • In groups, share both movements - learn each other's movement

Spatial Organisation

UNISION
*Teacher identifies a 'Motif' developing:  One movement -> Stop ->
Next movement -> Stop -> Next movement
*Develop transitions between movements - move to transition
 CONTRAST IN UNISON
*Group divides into 2
*Half the group in movement while other half do contrasting
   movement - different direction/level

CANNON
*Introduce 'Cannon' - like an ocean wave
*Explore the use of time - fast/slow
*Amalgamate:         UNISON>CONTRAST>CANNON
*Contrast of whole group at end of 'Cannon' - shapes/levels
*Exploration of group movement into and out of the middle into
   spatial arrangement
*Turn it into a sequence and movement that keeps the intention
   clear
*Groups return to individual arrangement
*Whole class walk around the space counting to 10 then hold shape
*Walk original evaluation number - pronounce paces, stop, hold shape
*Group walk in a clockwise direction - march/walk like in a routine >
   walk into group spatial arrangement

PERFORMANCE
Pink Floyd's:  We Don't Need No Education
  1. Walk around the circle and hold your shape
  2. Transition to group and perform UNISON>CONTRAST>CANNON
  3. Change spatial arrangement with one group at a time moving into the middle and performing their arrangement (all other groups remain still)
  4. All groups perform their arrangement again at the same time
  5. Walk in circle again and slowly individuals walk to the middle and hold a pose

Reflection:  Theme:      Evaluation of Practicum
Stimulus:  Word, Emotion, Number, Shape, Gesture
                    Express intention or rationale
Creative Process:  Go about making dance

Creative Process of Making Dance
I S A R E

IMPROVISED:    Experimental, Questions, Collaboration
SELECTION:       Selecting movement - what looks good, trial ideas and
                           decide what to keep
ARRANGE:          Arrange the space, Group Symmetry, Structures:
                           Unison, Contrast, Cannon
REFINEMENT:    Rehearse to remember movement, is this working?,
throw out ideas, retain what is wanted
EVALUATE:         Do you like what you have done?  If not, how do you
                           change it?

Group Reflection:     How effective was the Unison, Contrast, Cannon?
                                  What looked good?
                                  What would you change?
Group Suggestions:  Change some of the transitions
                                  Change spatial positions
                                  Make transitions smooth
Transition to middle:  how to enter and exit
End pose - hard to hold for a long time

END POSE
Important as it is the final thing people see and remember!
